Here is a enlighting interview with Matte from Psychedelic Groove Rockers, My Sleeping Karma. Conducted by Russian writer Aleks Evdokimov….

“Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression by saying something, and sometimes one creates as significant an impression by remaining silent. My Sleeping Karma combines the organic aspect of psychedelic groove rock with emotional shades of aphasian landscapes. That was the inTention of the first album and it still remains. Guitar, bass and drums in love with a soundboard. Now is the time to take it to the next level. My Sleeping Karma’s new album “Tri” is out on Elektrohasch Records”. (Myspace)

Q: It’s not very strange from my point of view that music which has an very sacred essence hiding in an eastern culture was born in a heart of Europe. I hate this kind of question but how did you start My Sleeping Karma? Did you think that the practice of spreading cosmic vibrations through the masses could help you to open your own chakras or clean your karma?
A: It was in 2005 when we started to jam sometimes together. During this time Matte and Steffen played mainly in a Stoner rock band called The Great Escape. So our intention was only to have fun while or through making music. We never thought to play a tour like our last one. Our band name and the whole concept of MSK has been added later on when we realized that also other people love our that kind of vibe. But our simple intention hasn’t got changed: we want to have fun.

Q: How was the band’s conception totally formed? What was in beginning – a word of Writing or Logos as music from the heart?
A: The name My Sleeping Karma was Matte´s idea. We spontaneously agreed because we all had the feeling that our more relaxed and psychedelic music needed to have a name that says more than things like desert, earth, machine or sun. We also wanted to have a kind of spiritual touch cause’ it fits to the music and -of course – to our thinking. 

Q: Who is an author of your site’s and album’s designs? Or maybe even some of you know Sanskrit letters? It looks cool, but I thought it seems strange that you didn’t produce t-shirts with the “Tri” art-work.
A: The artwork of our first album was made by our drummer Steffen mainly with a drawing painted by our guitar player Seppi. The webmaster of the MSK myspace-site is our keyboarder Norman and Denny – a very good friend of us- designed our Website and also the “TRI” CD-Cover. Just familiar thing 😉

Q: How do the common folk or kinsfolk treat to your likings, to your addiction to this sort of music or way of thinking? Germany is a Christian country and I often meet with misunderstanding living in a Christian country too because modern Christianity without it’s medieval esoteric component is simple mix of politics and morale codex and as any political organization it couldn’t accept another point of view.
A: It often depends on people’s age if they are open minded or not. In our generation religion does not have that big influence compared to times like for eg the 1950´s or 60´s. This older generation is related very strong to the Christian believes and most of them wondering about the -like they call- comeback of esoteric thinking.  But anyway they accept it. Also most of the younger people understand that way of thinkin´. I personally think the spirituality of mankind will rise in general in the next few years. 

Q: I asked this question 3 or 4 times (though I made about 110 interviews) but didn’t get a clear and well thought-out answer… I’m sure that you understand this idea: do you see yourself as channellers or communicators between the material world and the higher plains? It’s easy to answer when people play an primitive aggressive sort of music but there’s not so simple to come clear with that idea. What do you think?
A: Wow – cool thesis! I personally think that everybody has got the “tools” to communicate with the – let say universe. But not everybody realized this or is able to handle his tool – or at least don´t want to do it. In the end channeling means nothing more than to find the same spirit, the same wave – and we as a band found our own common wave. It depends on every single person to choose the same wave or not. You can come with us or go maybe also in a completely different direction. That’s the great thing on it because it works in every layer and direction.

Q: I heard only 2 of your albums – “Satya” and “Tri” but I see certain similarities in their structure, all of your songs are harmonic, natural and well balanced. A more interesting fact is that some of them are dynamic and cyclical. Was it really planned or is it a natural way of catching vibration of the Universe and reflecting it through the music?
A: It is simply our way of songwriting. We are not interested in putting as many licks as possible in a song or maybe showing great virtuosity on our instruments. That´s not the way it works. In our thinking music is pure emotions. Music needs to flow, needs to feel good and this is the thing we almost put attention on it: does it feel good while playing? If a single riff does not feel good – we won´t use it.  If we all do not have the same good feeling during playing a song  – we skip them.

Q: Can you say that this way of composing and playing as you demonstrated on “Satya” became sharper and brighter with “Tri”? I saw that some of your old ideas and even musical themes finally found their ultimate realization into the “Tri” compositions and I must admit that few ideas from “Satya” do not appear on “Tri” at all…
A: I don´t like it to say: “now we are much better compared to our last album” . It always has to be the right time for something. Like winter is not the right time for flowers – it maybe was not the right time for some of our ideas on “Satya”. We are all fine with our albums. They represent our thinkin´, our feeling of the time when we created them. And for sure the next album will be also different because we will face different feelings during the songwriting process.

Q: There is a song “Svaatanya” on the “Satya” CD with a girl singing pure and clean without any hot passion or uncontrolled desire. It is a normal way for music of My Sleeping Karma as it feels but “Tri” is instrumental album totally.
A: Svaatania was a small experience. When we recorded the album we had the feeling, that it might be too boring to have only a few instrumental songs without any voice or message. One reason was also that we created two of them mainly in the studio.  So we asked Katrin if she don´t want to add some voices on one of this songs. She agreed, we gave her the lyrics and three days later we recorded the vocals within two hours…..

Q: Why did you refuse to use the way of “interludes” into the “Tri” CD as it was with “Satya”? Though from my point of view there is some idea with alternation of fast and slow tracks in a whole conception of My Sleeping Karma… Is it about cyclical ways again? Or I just imagine it about the structure of your CDs?
A: We used the same interlude way on TRI – but given them names. We wanted to do it a bit different because we are a little bit afraid of using always the same way or concept. Sorry – same comparison again – seasons are always the same – but never identical. They are more like a spiral who turns on a circle but never touch the same point. We also try to never touch the same point.

Q: By the way My Sleeping Karma is a strange and obscure title for many  listeners, and I fail as I tried to remember similar term in Bhagavath Ghitta or simply understand it, so what does it mean? Is it a dreamy version of Karma to Burn?
A: The almost interesting thing was that it sounds interesting – you know? Our music can lead people to everywhere if they want. We tried to give our name the same option – that´s all.  

Q: As I understand “Tri” is a same term for Indian spiritual culture as “Trinity” is for Christianity. And I can see that there are two “Trinities” in your album at least: three shapes of God in compositions “Brahma”, “Shiva” and “Vishnu” and three gunas – “Tamas”, “Sattva” and “Rajas”. But there are 9 songs in that album, does this conception spread onto last ones?
A: You´re absolutely right – but correctly it is called “Trimurti”. There are three gods in the Indian Hinduism. They are supported by three females and three Gunas – in summary nine (Song titles). Also the three gods are symbolized by earth, water and fire – and  three colors (white, black, red). Every single component has been used somewhere on the CD-cover….

Q: What do you like to express with “Tamas” composition (“Tri” album)? I understand calmness of “Sattva” because it’s guna of harmony and peace, but “Rajas” sounds more dramatic than energetic as “Tamas” sounds too dynamical for a track which describes a nature of the idle state of mind.
A: It is nearly impossible to construe a self written song – because you are always prejudiced.
We wrote the songs first and created the concept after-wards – that´s the point.  So we had to decide after-wards which name fits best to which song. Means this was more a spontaneously decision. 

Q: Oh, how did you come into collaboration with Elektrohasch Records? What is this label? I think that you find label for “Tri” fast enough and I’m glad that music of My Sleeping Karma is spreading through the world in such successful way.
A: Since our debut album we are on Elektrohash records. Stefan – the boss of this label and also guitar player from the German Band Colourhaze organized the so called “swamp room happening” in Munich which was our second gig. After this gig he asked us, if we don´t want to release a record on his label – so the collaboration started and work fine until today 😉
And the name of this Label also fits perfect to our music – isn’t it?

Q: Will the vinyl version of “Tri” clear Karma of listeners if they’ll listen it 108 times in succession? 🙂
A: We never tried this – but maybe it sounds great 😉

Q: You play a lot of gigs in Europe and you even visited Greece during the last week of September, is there any difference of public relations on your music in different countries?
A: We always try to stay in close contact to the people during our concerts. As we are in a underground scene this is still possible.

Q: I well know that such a question is more than predictable and I know that My Sleeping Karma released “Tri” CD not so long ago, but what are your plans for nearby future mates?
A: Our plan is to play the already booked gigs in 2010 and after-wards start slowly the songwriting for the next album.  It depends how fast we are with that but recording is roughly planned for spring 2011 then play some festivals, doing the concept thing and release it in autumn 2011.  Then let’s see what happens….

Q: I wonder – do all listeners spread their time during your gigs in meditation levitating before the scene? 🙂 What do your listeners mostly do during your concerts?
A: They´re almost moving to the beat!

Q: When did you meet the world of Indian culture and its beliefs? Do all the members of Sleeping Karma share these beliefs?
A: To be honest – we are not very much in the details of Indian believes as all of us are Christians. But we share big sympathies’ to the Buddhism and this way of life. I also seen the Dali Lama last year in Frankfurt and I was very much impressed of his big spreading spirituality.   

Q: Does it help you in your life? Any advice for My Sleeping Karma followers? Or should everyone find his/her way by themselves?
A: You are right – it doesn’t make sense to say this or that is the right way, think or believe. Everybody has to find his own way.  There are many, many ways to your inner light……
