Universe 217 – S/T …   1 comment

This amazing artistic yet almost sadistically heavy Greek band has named what it does as ‘non-tempo music’. Their term is more than a little deceiving in every way, to the point that they were not accurate. What Universe217 actually are as a group is an artistic Ambient Doom Metal played to the very extreme edge of heaviness which has redefined what ‘Doom’ just might mean..

Explaining just what Universe217 is is pretty clear here. Just take the members of Novembers Doom, Candlemass, Sick and St. Vitus and fed them all huge doses of downers and made sure every band member was suicidally and clinically depressed then put them in a recording studio… that is exactly what Universe217 sounds like. It is both amazing to hear with its ambient yet crushingly heavy sounds that convey the despondency written with as it sends a shadow over everyone’s heart an into the darkness of a failing soul.

Brooding melodies offset dark and rather ethereal vocals that sets the tone quite nicely. Heavy guitars thunder through the near dirge like trance that Universe217 use to convey a sense of utter hopelessness as it slides further into that hidden barren landscape of ones tortured soul. The lyrical picture defines the feel of sheer desolation of a dank dirty world that is made almost primordial as it seethes with a great sense of near evil melancholy …. as if pain, death and despair live so deep in the murk that no light of day can ever reaches through the gloom. Doom at its finest

I found myself drawn to this album, as it dark majesty engulfed me. Just how the band has put everything together, it is the most scary thing I have ever heard to the point that I think it could traumatize Stephen King into ending up writing scripts for Barney the big purple dinosaur on PBS if he listened to this CD.

Universe217 truly have made a doom classic, one that I had no idea was out there. I want more, damn it!!

  1. Very nice voice! I've seen them live 3-4 times and they rule! Their newest album isn't as good as this one in my opinion!

Very artistic band although I wouldn't compare them with Vitus or Candlemass. November's Doom, early Paradise Lost maybe…
