Enchantment – Dance The Marble Naked …   Leave a comment

Here is what you could refer to as the second (or possibly third) wave of British Doom/Death Metal. This band combined mid-period Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride to create their own (arguably) original sound in that they never sound too much like either of the aforementioned. Wearing their influences on their sleeves and adding their own flare to the sound they were developing should’ve taken this band to the heights of their heroes. It didn’t however and it all goes back to one thing, the vocalist.

The guitars go from distorted to clean (periodically) utilizing more open chorded parts to palm muted ones. They sound as if they are tuned to standard or perhaps ‘C’, either way they are very treble heavy. There are no solos but plenty of leads filling the grandiose riffs with a more epic than downtrodden vibe. The bass and the drums are more or less standard with a few odd time signatures from the drummer here and there. Musically speaking, there are some good ideas on display; the melodies and song structures are well thought out. Some of the weaker points about this would be some of these ideas aren’t expanded upon or stop abruptly, but this is a début after all. The speed of the songs is more of a moderate mid-paced tempo throughout the CD.

There are only two real flaws on display here, the thin production and the singer.

Too many bands, Doom Metal or otherwise, have been pulled under due to poor singers and this could be a/the reason they are no longer around. His spoken/clean vocals are fine, very Stainthorpe-esq, and should have been used more often. His Death vocals (if they can so be called) make it sound as if he’s trying to shit a boulder throughout the entire record. Simply foul and hilarious, why the band thought this guy would make it as a singer is a profound mystery on par with the age-old question of “What’s the meaning of life?”

In conclusion this is a great début album from a band with perhaps one of the worst vocalists of all time. If you’re looking for something good check these guys out. This gets a 5/10, had they used another singer this probably would’ve been a 7/10.
